Last year I wrote a post about Svenska Kyrkan and how they’ve got this All Hallows-service online where you can light a digital candle for someone you want to honor the memory of. I really like this idea, so I want to bring some attention to it this year too. What’s new about this year though is that your ”digital candle” will be lit up physically too in one if Svenska Kyrkans new candle-trees that they’ve placed in 15 different locations around Sweden. If you want, you can find your way to one of these trees, watch the candle you’ve lit through the online-service and listen to authors discussing grief and sorrow. Almost like attending a little ceremony.

I think it’s very important to be able to have more open discussions about difficult topics such as grief. The cyber-world can be quite ”filtered” most of the times, leaving true emotions out of the picture. That’s why I’m very supportive of ideas and events like the one Svenska Kyrkan is a part of here. Even though I do see an improvement in what’s being talked about and not in digital forums, there’s still more work to be done in that field. This All Hallows-weekend I’ll especially be dedicating my thoughts to my grandma who passed away in cancer and my friend Axel who died a couple of years ago. I’m giving myself time to walk through the memories I have of them, even though it’s tough for me to do so. Mourning is never easy, but when you’ve allowed yourself to feel sad for a moment you do feel relieved afterwards. I think All Hallows provides us with an opportunity to deal with grief and sorrow. These days creates a temporary breathing room where we can process things and thoughts that we choose not to think about every day.

All of us should try to make use of this, I believe it’s a healthy action. Visit Svenska Kyrkans web-page here to light a digital candle.
