I have been doing some reading from Oprah Winfrey’s latest book ”What I Know for Sure”, a collection of her ”What I Know for Sure”-columns that she has written over the years. Oprah has always been a role model for me and I thought I would be enchanted by her writing. Instead, my reaction is quite the opposite. I actually get frustrated reading the book. There is so much babbling going on about right drive and attitudes, to avoid negative thoughts and so on – a lot of babbling about things I too have been advocating in the past.

The texts make me realize that I have changed a lot during the last two years, probably because I am a mother now.

I can no longer embrace texts claiming that ”positive thinking is the solution to all problems”, ”success is a result of your own actions” or ”everyone can succeed, you just have to want it bad enough”. I am aware of the fact that many phrases and sayings like these have been associated with me through the years, but I cannot be supportive of such statements today.

To be honest I do not really know what happened. When you think about it, it is quite strange that I have changed my opinions since I have two healthy children, a husband I love, money in the bank and a career that has worked like a dream. Now should be the time where I totally stand behind the ”right attutide” way of thinking, but instead I feel the other way around.

I feel more humbled than ever before life and that must be because I have become a parent. You cannot ”think” your way to a good life, because all of us do not have the same basis. Some people go thourgh their whole lives fighting for what they want without getting it. Some kids have really shitty upbringings which will never stop haunting them and that is just so unfair. The funny thing is that I am realizing this now when my life feels like a fairytale and I could have chosen to see this as a result of ”The Secret”. Maybe my new viewpoints are due to my understanding of how fragile everything is because I now have so much more to lose. Or realizing that I have been fighting for what I have, but that sheer luck also have been a part of it.

I am lucky to be able to get pregnant, lucky to be healthy, lucky that my family did not have to cross oceans in a rubber boat. The most important thing though is that I feel grateful, but at the same time still do not feel good enough. Even if that feeling is hard to cope with, I believe it will keep motivating me. Motivate me to inspire, start my own foundation, help out with the refugee-crisis and maybe even become a foster parent for children in the future. I think the best part of it is that this ”think-right-and-everything-will-work-out”-bubble of mine finally bursted, because I am convinced that I can do more for society when I accept that life is not fair.

Dear Oprah, your writing about looking on the bright side of life is of course very inspiring to some people. There is no doubt you will have an easier daily life if you try to think positive, but it does not mean that life is easy. Or that the right attitude will give you an account statement worth millions. Sure, we have been sweating blood to be able to have these dream jobs of ours, but I am sure that a lot of it was also about being at the right place at the right time. I also think that accepting yourself and who you are is more important than believing in life itself. Some days can be awfully stressful and dark, but feeling proud about yourself at the end of even those days, that is what I truly believe is the key to success.
